Make a dwelling place for the Lord. God wants to dwell in temples that are not made by the hands of men. Buildings are made by men, but the Bible says He formed you in your mother’s womb. Man did not form you. Now that we realize God has built us, He calls us a temple and wants to dwell in us. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit! We are the tabernacle of God! We are the tent, like in the Old Testament where God wanted a specific dwelling place just for Him!
The Lord says keep your mind and heart empty and I will fill it. God is not just filling anyone! He is filling those who make a place for Him. In the Old Testament, in order for them to have an outpouring of the presence of God, they had to make a specific structure for Him. The structure had to be the way God wanted it. It had to be specific. The measurements were to be specific. When the tents were built or the temples or the buildings, God wanted specific things going on in and around before He could dwell in them.
He wanted His altar a certain way. He wanted the things done at the altar done a specific way. He didn’t want people going in there to fool around for meaningless purposes. When the priest didn’t do his job, he was dragged out by a rope.
When Aaron’s sons were messing around at the altar and doing things a way that God didn’t instruct, God consumed them by fire. God’s temple was specific and holy! And now we are the temple of God. We are the tent of meetings.
God wants this temple to be specific. It’s not just our body that is the temple. It’s really our mind and heart. Our mind and heart are the control centers of our body, and God wants to be in control. He wants to take the wheel. He wants to invade the mind. He wants to take over the heart. The intentions, the thoughts.
Do you want God to find a resting place in you? But are you ready to empty all your thoughts, pursuits, intentions, desires, and ways? To be empty is to be full in Him. The Bible says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those that empty themselves, empty their minds and hearts that He would fill them with the Kingdom of God!
Some of us think, “Well, I’m not evil. I don’t have evil thoughts or intentions. Will God accept me?”
The Bible didn’t call the bad tree in the garden the tree of the knowledge of evil. He called it the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Good was on that bad tree. The only one that is truly good is God. We can never be good enough for God in and of ourselves.
Yet when God dwells inside of us, when a God thing dwells in us, He is pleased! That’s what people don’t understand. Many think God just wants people to stop sinning just because He doesn't like it. Beloved, it’s more than that! Every sin that you do separates you from God.
God doesn’t separate from you, but you separate yourself because you are doing your own thing or making something else your master. The Bible says He will never leave you or forsake you. Yet when you sin, you’re actually leaving Him and forsaking Him.
Separating from sin isn’t just about being a good boy. Separating from sin is about getting close to God. We need to make a dwelling place for Him and understand that separating from the world isn’t about being a monk. It’s so that we would be counted worthy that He would come into this mortal body and bring heaven on earth!
We need to give up a good thing to get a God thing. Religion will tell you not to do evil but that’s as far as they will tell you to separate from the world. Yet God wants us to separate from this world to where our time is His, our thoughts are His, our plans and aspirations are whatever His are. You want a pure heart? A pure heart is a heart that dwells in Him. He is purity, and to be pure is to be in Him!
We need to empty our minds of the things of this life and our daily affairs so that He would put Himself in our lives. We need to knock down the Tower of Babel in our hearts and minds and rip out the foundation and start clean again, and this time let Him build as we just receive.
We were meant to simply receive from God as He freely gives. The problem is we’re too busy fending for ourselves and searching for ourselves instead of waiting on God. God is looking for clean ground in you, a ground with no former foundation, no old roots, not even other seeds.
Will he find it in you?
"Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:19-22
We are being prepared to be a habitation for God. A temple made without the hands of Man. This is why God formed us Himself. That He would dwell in what He formed. Now it’s time to let Him form our hearts and minds. He’s looking for an empty mind, an empty heart.
God was not satisfied with busy Martha. He was satisfied with Mary that laid at His feet all day. We all have priorities and things we must deal with. Yet we need to start making Him our priority. All that’s going to matter is what we did in Him and for Him.
Lose yourself that you would find Him. It’s time for the body of Christ to be a habitation for God.
