“He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.” Job 41:34
If we read starting at the beginning of Job chapter 41, the context is Leviathan. For he is king over all the children of pride. The proud call him daddy. Yet we are children of God. We are children of humility, and Leviathan will not be our father. For he, Leviathan, that twisting serpent, is built on a foundation of pride. The proud are his victims. This is why we need to destroy every ounce of pride in us. The more pride we lay waste, the fewer Leviathan issues we will have. See, ego has a voice. Pride has a voice. It’s Leviathan.
The more pride you have, the more power he has over you. Chapter 41 of Job says, who can draw Leviathan out with a hook? Or his tongue with a cord? No man but God. Job was a righteous man, but something deeper was being exposed in him that was not seen before. As we see in Job 23 as Job says that he would order his cause before the Almighty and fill his mouth with arguments. That he might dispute with the Almighty. Job’s arrogance was revealed in this, although he was a righteous man. Job’s sin was the pride he had in his own righteousness because he felt he did not deserve this because he did everything right, and walked right, but just like Paul said, “Shall the thing formed, say to the one having formed it, Why have you made me like thus?” (Romans 9:20). See, God already knew what He was doing before the devil even came and asked to test Job to see if he would turn from God. God already had an eye on a deeper level of purification for Job. As we see in Job, he repents in Job 42 for professing to speak things that he did not understand. Only pride does that. Only pride knows it all. Even Jesus said about the pharisees, for because they say they can see, therefore, they remain blind. See, when you think you know something, but you don’t really know, it's pride. Therefore, hearing, they did not understand; seeing, they did not perceive. Yet they profess to know! Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. And if any man thinks he knows something, let him know nothing. For he that thinks he can stand should take heed lest he fall. For pride cometh before a fall (Proverbs 16:18), and a man that thinks he can stand on His own has already fallen from grace. For He gives grace to the humble, and He brings low those who are proud.
For apart from Him, we can do nothing, but through Christ, we can do all things. The humble can do all things, for He gives grace to the humble, not to the proud, lest He strengthen their pride. For God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:6-7). Do you think just because you’re a child of God, God can’t resist you? When James said, “God resists the proud,” he was speaking to the church. And when we resist pride, he will give us grace to resist the devil. Because He gives grace to the humble, and the humble submit to God that the devil may flee. As Job 41 speaks about Leviathan, we actually see a description of a spirit that moves in man, but even deeper, we’re seeing the description of a prideful man, and as it says how Leviathan, “Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out” (verse 19). And in verses 21 and 22, it says, “His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. In his neck remaineth strength.” And we see how Stephen calls the pharisees and the council, a stiff-necked generation, always resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51), “in their neck remaineth strength.” And just like James says about those who have a hot tongue, that setteth on fire the course of nature (James 3:6), that destroy with flames that go out of their mouth, how they boast of great things, so are those built upon pride. The same ones that accused Jesus, that questioned Jesus, that persecuted Jesus and tried to use their flaming tongues of hell to destroy His ministry and the works of the Holy Spirit, so are those filled with pride. Who turn into the accuser of the brethren because of jealousy. Just like the pharisees when they saw Jesus casting out demons and crowds gathering around Him in wonder and amazement saying, “Is this not the son of David?” (Matthew 12:23). Jealousy rose up in them, and came the Leviathan lies, the twisting serpents, assumptions, “He cast out demons by Beelzebub” (Matthew 9:34). All because of pride. Why? Because the pharisees wanted the crowds, the authority, and the attention. That was the heart of their issue. Because of pride, not only could they not see Him, but they could not receive Him. And we know it's written, “If they knew they were crucifying the Lord of Glory, they would not have done it” (1 Corinthians 2:8). Yet why did they? Because of pride. Because they said they can see, therefore, they remained blind.
There are blind people in the flesh, but there are also blind people in the spirit! Those who say they can see. God is opening blind eyes in the flesh, and it’s a miracle. Yet even greater is it a miracle for a prideful man to see because not only was he blind and can see now, but he receives a new heart! His heart turning from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh, for the pure heart can see God. For out of the heart flows the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). Humility brings purity, and the mighty make war against this beast leviathan through purity, as it says. For the eye solvent of the proud is humility, that they may see. Humility starts in the heart. Many have false humility because their humility is in front of man and not in secret in front of God. What is the reason you walk in humility? To gain attention? To act like you don’t want to be seen, but in your heart, you still want to be seen? Humility is in the heart. Humility is in the unseen. Even though God will reward us openly for the things we do in secret, our light and humility will not always be hidden under a bushel. Yet still, our aim and the working in of humility is done in the secret place, where no one sees, no one knows what you’re doing or how low you’re going, but God does. To be satisfied with what God sees and no man sees is humility! The performance of humility is done in the secret place of the Most High. The Heart!
Just as it says, Leviathan has a heart as firm as a stone, and as a piece of a millstone (Job 41:24), it says just as Jesus said, “If you deceive one of these little ones, it is better for a millstone to be hung around your neck and be thrown into the sea” (Matthew 18:6), but the problem is the millstone is in their heart, hard as a rock. Making proselytes out of their own pride to serve their own pride, and making them worse of a devil than themselves. For if we cannot humble ourselves as a little child, we cannot be great in the Kingdom. Humility is childlikeness in the Kingdom, and it is the greatest in the Kingdom according to Matthew 18:4. This is the key to victory over Leviathan: Humility. For humility will destroy pride, and when pride is destroyed, leviathan has no foundation to stand on, no environment to live in, because he is the king of pride. Where there is no pride, he cannot be king, he cannot twist, he cannot lie. There is no ego left to speak through, no pride to project his voice, no insecurity to swim through because pride is the greater enemy, the root of the beast. What is the root of insecurity? What is the root of jealousy? What is the root of envy? It’s pride! And why is it pride? Because it’s all about self! Because it’s about you! All of the doors of Leviathan come down to pride.
Father, we thank you that we will not think of ourselves more highly than we ought to, but in lowliness of mind, we will esteem others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). And we will look not only on our own things but in humility, on the things of others! This is the key. This is the weapon. Destroy the altars of pride in your life. Go lower to go higher. Leviathan goes after the high things. Those who go after high things, go where Leviathan goes, but the Lord shall exalt the humble. For it is greater to go to the lowest seat that He may call you to a higher seat rather than sit in the higher seat and be brought low to the lowest seat. So, we thank you, God, King of Humility, that we will humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, and you will exalt us in due timing, not in our own timing.
